Summit County Hazardous Waste & Bulk Pickup Rules by City

Here’s the truth about hazardous waste in Summit County: timing is everything. Summit County ReWorks collects it at one location in Stow, one afternoon a week, and only during its summer season. The 2026 season ended September 24. The 2027 season starts June 3.

Bulk pickup is its own puzzle. Akron and Cuyahoga Falls run their own sanitation departments. Stow, Barberton, Macedonia, and Munroe Falls contract with Kimble. Tallmadge uses Rumpke, Twinsburg uses WM, and Hudson residents choose from approved haulers. Every one has different limits.

We pulled the rules from ReWorks and each community’s official pages and put them in one place. Where a community doesn’t publish a rule, we say so and give you the number to call.

Rules checked September 2026. Seasons, fees, and haulers change, often when contracts renew. Always confirm with your community or ReWorks before you load up.

Summit County ReWorks: Hazardous Waste, in Season Only

Summit County ReWorks runs household hazardous waste collection at 1201 Graham Rd. in Stow, at the Route 8 overpass. During the season, collections are Thursdays from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. The 2026 season ended Thursday, September 24, and the 2027 season begins Thursday, June 3. ReWorks says most people come in the first two hours, and it doesn’t recommend lining up before collection starts.

It’s for Summit County residents only, and the material has to come from your own home. ReWorks won’t take material collected from several sources, and it won’t accept waste from businesses, faith-based organizations, schools, or nonprofits. No containers larger than 5 gallons. Collections stop for lightning, strong winds, or heavy rain.

What ReWorks takes, according to its accepted list: oil-based and solvent-based paint and thinner; gasoline and gas mixtures, antifreeze, brake fluid, and used motor oil; acids, bleach, and household cleaners; adhesives and caulks; aerosol cans; batteries; e-cigarettes and vapes; fire extinguishers; road flares; kerosene and lighter fluid; pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides; pool chemicals; and propane cylinders 30 pounds or smaller.

What it does not take: latex and water-based paint, ammunition, explosives, construction debris, containers larger than 5 gallons, electronics, medical waste, scrap tires, and appliances with Freon, including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers.

What Goes Where in Summit County

  • Latex paint. ReWorks doesn’t take it. Dry it out, leave the lid off the can, and put it in your regular trash. Barberton excludes paint from regular pickup, and Twinsburg lists paint as household hazardous waste, so check your community’s page first.
  • Oil-based paint and stain. ReWorks takes them, in season, in containers of 5 gallons or less.
  • Off-season hazardous waste. ReWorks points to other options for some items year-round. Used motor oil can often go to an oil change station or auto parts store. Fluorescent tubes can go to Batteries Plus or Chemical Solvents, and compact fluorescent bulbs can go through Veolia’s RecycleABulb program.
  • Tires. ReWorks says there are no free disposal options for scrap tires in Summit County. ReWorks Recycling Days take up to 10 tires per vehicle at $4 per tire, paid in advance through registration. ReWorks also lists Lightner Tire in Akron and Liberty Tire in Minerva year-round. Ohio requires an Ohio EPA registration to transport more than 10 tires.
  • Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners. ReWorks doesn’t take them. Stow’s hauler won’t take anything with Freon. Barberton and Tallmadge require the Freon removed and the unit tagged first. ReWorks lists City Scrap and Salvage as an option for Freon appliances.
  • Electronics and TVs. ReWorks’ hazardous waste collection doesn’t take electronics. ReWorks lists Best Buy, e-Waste LLC, RET3, and Goodwill as options, and says to call ahead about fees. ReWorks Recycling Days also take up to 2 TVs and 2 monitors per vehicle.
  • Medications and sharps. Summit County Public Health runs medication drop boxes for county residents, and takes sharps in approved, labeled sharps containers of 1 gallon or smaller for $5 each.

Township Residents: Check Your Township’s Hauler

Several Summit County townships contract one hauler for all residents. Your bulk rules come from that contract.

  • Bath Township: Rumpke is the exclusive hauler. Bulky items are collected at the curb on your regular day at no extra charge, but you must schedule 24 hours ahead by calling Rumpke at (800) 828-8171.
  • Copley Township: Republic is the exclusive hauler, with township pricing listed through August 31, 2027. Items outside the cart must each weigh 50 pounds or less and fit within 2 cubic yards.
  • Springfield Township: Republic is the exclusive residential hauler from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2031. Service includes bulk items like chairs, couches, and appliances, with an extra charge for appliances with refrigerants.

When It Makes Sense to Call Us

ReWorks handles the chemicals, in season. Your city or hauler handles a few bulk items at the curb. Everything else is where we come in:

  • It’s a move-out or a full cleanout. Akron gives each home three Special Bulk Volume pickups a year, and they have to be scheduled ahead.
  • You’re over your limit. Stow allows two bulk items a week and charges $45 for each extra. Hudson’s preferred hauler takes one a week.
  • It’s a piano or a hot tub. Twinsburg lists both as unacceptable, and several communities cap items at 50 pounds. We remove pianos and hot tubs.
  • It’s a refrigerator or air conditioner. ReWorks won’t take it, Stow’s hauler won’t take it, and other cities want it tagged first. We take them to metal recyclers, who remove the refrigerant.
  • It’s construction or remodeling debris. Akron won’t take it in your carts, and ReWorks won’t either. We take it to transfer stations and landfills that accept it.

We can take dried-out paint cans, but not liquid paint or hazardous waste. For that, ReWorks is the place, when the season opens.

The number you get on the phone or online is an estimate, built from your description. When the crew arrives, they see the actual items and give you a firm quote before anything is touched. That’s the number you pay. If it doesn’t work for you, you owe nothing and we leave.

Same-day or next-day service is typically available, and we never charge a rush fee.

Every job is backed by our Amazing Service Guarantee: we promise to be friendly, professional, and dependable, or it’s FREE!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I drop off household hazardous waste in Summit County?

Summit County ReWorks collects household hazardous waste at 1201 Graham Rd. in Stow, at the Route 8 overpass. Collections run on Thursdays from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. during the season only. The 2026 season ended September 24, and the 2027 season begins June 3. It’s for Summit County residents only, the material must come from your own home, and containers can’t be larger than 5 gallons. ReWorks takes oil-based paint, solvents, fuels, automotive fluids, cleaners, pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries, and propane cylinders up to 30 pounds. It doesn’t take latex paint, electronics, tires, or Freon appliances.

What do I do with hazardous waste when Summit County ReWorks is closed for the season?

ReWorks only collects household hazardous waste during its summer season, which ended September 24, 2026 and starts again June 3, 2027. For some items, ReWorks lists year-round options. Used motor oil can often go to an oil change station or an auto parts store. Fluorescent tubes can go to Batteries Plus or Chemical Solvents, and compact fluorescent bulbs can go through Veolia’s RecycleABulb program. ReWorks doesn’t take latex paint as hazardous waste. It says to dry it out, leave the lid off, and put it in your regular trash. For anything else, ReWorks can be reached at (330) 374-0383.

Does Summit County ReWorks take latex paint?

No. Summit County ReWorks lists latex and water-based paint as not accepted at its household hazardous waste collection. Instead, ReWorks says latex paint, once dried out, can go in your curbside trash, and to leave the lid off the can so it can be seen. Check your community’s rules first, though. Barberton excludes paint from regular pickup, and Twinsburg lists paint as household hazardous waste. ReWorks does take oil-based and solvent-based paint and thinner during its season, in containers of 5 gallons or less.

How do I get rid of old tires in Summit County?

Summit County ReWorks says there are no free disposal options for scrap tires. Its Recycling Days take up to 10 tires per vehicle at $4 per tire, paid in advance through registration. ReWorks also lists Lightner Tire in Akron and Liberty Tire in Minerva as year-round options. Some cities take tires at the curb. Akron allows tires at the curb if they’re 3 feet away from your city cart. Others, like Barberton and Twinsburg, don’t. Ohio law requires an Ohio EPA registration to transport more than 10 tires.

How do I get rid of a refrigerator in Summit County?

Summit County ReWorks doesn’t take refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, or dehumidifiers. Curbside rules vary. Stow’s hauler doesn’t accept anything with Freon. Barberton requires the Freon removed and the unit tagged by a qualified technician, or it will be left. Tallmadge requires it professionally emptied and tagged. Akron doesn’t publish a Freon rule, so call 311 before setting one out. ReWorks lists City Scrap and Salvage as an option for Freon appliances. Ohio Junk Force also takes refrigerators and air conditioners to metal recyclers, who remove the refrigerant.

How many bulk items can I put out for pickup in Summit County?

It depends on your community. Akron picks up large items weekly on your collection day and allows three prescheduled Special Bulk Volume pickups a year for bigger jobs. Cuyahoga Falls gives full-service customers two bulky items a week, requested in advance. Stow allows two a week and charges $45 for each extra item. Twinsburg allows three a week. Hudson’s preferred hauler, Republic, takes one a week. Barberton limits items outside the cart to 2 cubic yards per collection. Tallmadge, Macedonia, and Munroe Falls include bulk pickup, but you need to contact the hauler to schedule it.

Will the City of Akron pick up a move-out or cleanout pile?

Only if you schedule it. Akron says you must preschedule a Special Bulk Volume Pickup if you have a large amount of bags, boxes, or trash after cleaning out your house, basement, or garage, or after moving out. It has to be scheduled at least one working day before your collection day, and each home is allowed three a year. Items can’t go out before 4:30 p.m. the day before. Akron won’t take roofing, concrete, drywall, bricks, or other construction materials in your carts.

Do I have to wrap a mattress for pickup in Summit County?

In many Summit County communities, yes. Stow requires upholstered items to be wrapped and sealed in plastic. Barberton requires mattresses, box springs, and upholstered furniture to be wrapped and sealed in plastic. Tallmadge requires furniture and mattresses to be wrapped in plastic, and Twinsburg requires mattresses, box springs, and furniture in plastic disposal bags. Akron and Cuyahoga Falls don’t publish a wrapping rule. Akron includes mattresses in its weekly large-item pickup, and Cuyahoga Falls says to place them at the curb on collection day.

Will my trash hauler pick up a piano or hot tub in Summit County?

Usually not. Twinsburg lists pianos and hot tubs as unacceptable for pickup. Several communities also cap the weight of items outside the cart. Stow and Munroe Falls set a 50-pound limit, and Copley Township requires each item to weigh 50 pounds or less. Summit County ReWorks doesn’t take them at its drop-off in Stow either, since it only collects household hazardous waste. For a piano or hot tub, you’ll need a hauler with the crew and equipment to move it safely. Ohio Junk Force removes pianos and hot tubs.

When does it make sense to hire a junk removal company in Summit County?

Honestly, if your city or hauler will take it and you can wait, use them. Hiring someone makes sense when you’re over your limit, when it’s a move-out or cleanout Akron would count against your three Special Bulk Volume pickups, when it’s a piano, hot tub, or refrigerator the curb won’t take, or when it’s remodeling debris. With Ohio Junk Force, the number you get on the phone or online is an estimate, built from your description. When the crew arrives, they see the actual items and give you a firm quote before anything is touched. That’s the number you pay. If it doesn’t work for you, you owe nothing and we leave.
